April: The Legal Translation Month
April will be a month dedicated to the improvement of quality in the legal translation field, with its center in the city of London. The European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA) is holding its third General Assembly on the 6th April 2013, while the Association of Police and Court Interpreters (APCI) is giving a conference called “The Challenges to Professional Translation and Interpreting in the Justice Sector”, which will take place on the 5th and 6th of April. The Quality in Legal Translation (QUALETRA) project on the 4th of April will be launched to provide the appropriate context for the other two meetings to take place.

The European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA)
EULITA is an association of legal interpreters and translators from all around Europe whose aim is to promote associations of interpreters and translators while advocating cooperation with educational institutions in the field of legal translation. Moreover, the association’s goal is to help establish a register of highly-qualified professionals that can help ensure the quality of justice across the different languages and cultures within the European Union.
The Association of Police and Court Interpreters (APCI)
This association, which is already thirty nine years old, is a professional affiliation of independent freelance interpreters who work in the field of legal interpretation. Its aim of raising professional standards and foster good relationships between interpreters agrees with the aims of EULITA, which has acknowledged the APCI as a member. Moreover, the APCI works as a forum to which the members can go for advice related to the profession.
Quality in Legal Translation (QUALETRA)
QUALETRA is a new project promoted by EULITA that will focus on the legal translation field and will try to ensure quality translation services for criminal proceedings and for the European Arrest Warrant. The project will work together with seven universities to ensure proper training of future professionals.
